Living in Harpenden: A Local Area Guide
History of Harpenden
Nestled in the heart of Hertfordshire, Harpenden is a small residential town situated midway between St Albans and Luton, 25 miles to the northwest of London. The town made number one on the list of the top 50 most desirable towns to live in 2023 and named one of the UK’s most desirable places to live in 2025 – and it’s not difficult to understand why!
Harpenden is a town with a rich and fascinating history dating back to pre-Roman times. Originally a small agricultural village, Harpenden has grown significantly over the centuries, with its population increasing tenfold. It is now a prosperous commuter town due to its excellent transport links to London, yet its evolution from a village of just 3,000 people to its current size of over 30,000 has not meant the loss of its village character.
In fact, some of the residents of the town still affectionately call Harpenden, with its beautiful period buildings and open green spaces ‘the village’. The town’s strong sense of community continues to be one of its defining features.
